Vinyl liners

Will a pop-up canopy damage my vinyl liner?

Short answer: yes. Bare pop-up canopy feet are one of the most common causes of slow vinyl-liner leaks. The plastic and metal feet were engineered to bite into grass — exactly the wrong shape for a pool floor.

What actually goes wrong

A standard 10×10 pop-up canopy puts roughly 25-35 pounds of weight on each foot when the frame is up. That weight rests on a contact patch the size of a quarter. On grass, that pressure is fine. On a vinyl liner, every step around the canopy grinds that small patch into the liner like a dull pencil.

Three failure modes are common:

  • Puncture — a sharp edge on the foot bites through the liner and you have a slow leak nobody notices until the water level drops two inches a week.
  • Abrasion — repeated dragging and resetting wears through the vinyl in one spot.
  • Crease tears — the foot pushes the liner against the cove (the edge where the floor meets the wall) and the liner tears along the crease.

What your warranty actually covers

Almost no vinyl-liner warranty covers damage from objects placed in the pool. Pop-up canopies fall squarely into that exclusion. You will pay out of pocket for a patch (around $40 in materials, or $150-300 if a pool company does it) or a full liner replacement ($2,500-4,500 for an average backyard pool).

The fix

The cheapest fix is to never put a canopy leg directly on the liner. Canopy Turtles are patented ABS shells that slip over each canopy foot and bolt on with stainless screws. The smooth, contoured underside spreads the weight across the liner so the load on any one square inch is too low to cut, scratch or grind.

They install in five minutes with a screwdriver, hold the canopy in place without weight bags, and stay on all summer.

Solve the problem in five minutes.

Canopy Turtles bolt to the bottom of any 10×10 pop-up canopy and protect every pool surface from scratches and punctures.
